NECTARSONGS...began it's life as a theatre piece about refugees and asylum seeking people in detention in Australia. It was very well-performed by Belinda Berrington last year, and afterwards we decided it was such a heavy subject that it needed to rest while we considered the best method of developing it further. I was really uncertain about representing people from other cultures, it didn't sit well although the issues were pressing on me to question the way human rights are being breached and social justice appears to be thin on the hallowed ground of Ruddock and Vanstone's watch.
The
holding of refugees in detention is to confine people in a condition of
state-imposed purdah.
I thought about the prospect of sudden, dramatic change; political, epidemic, economic, religious change occurring in my own cosy comfort zone of white western middle class culture and the prospect of detention gained a whole new bucket of ice cold reality.

What if dramatic change happens here, tomorrow
morning, without warning? I asked the question "what if my survival, my
family's survival was threatened by war, religious persecution, or
starvation and we managed to escape to a life of isolation, separation,
alienation & indignity, how would I feel?

SOLEIL speaks...
I have drifted here, searching for you upon ruinous crests of waves, in so many black and bitter days, that I have tumbled in tides of white sorrows, as if the oceans were such empty seas into which we must deliver our pain, our hatred, and toss away our warbones evermore….free to glide and speckle in glinting sparks of light upon our slick and shining joys… ohhh, return to me now.
